It isn’t. A modest, deliberately chosen starting system will outperform almost any all-in-one soundbar or Bluetooth speaker.

Start with the speakers

Speakers matter more than any other single component in a starting system, because they’re where electrical signal finally becomes sound. A pair of modest bookshelf speakers from an established, unglamorous brand will consistently outperform a similarly priced soundbar, simply because two separate speakers can create a real stereo image that a single enclosure physically cannot.

A source that doesn’t apologize for itself

For most new listeners, a phone or laptop streaming to a small integrated amplifier is a perfectly legitimate source. The integrated amp is the piece worth spending real thought on, since it needs to supply clean, sufficient power to whatever speakers you choose.

The first upgrade that matters is stereo separation, not stereo spending.

Stands or isolation, even improvised ones, make a bigger difference than most beginners expect. Bookshelf speakers placed directly on a desk will vibrate the surface beneath them, muddying the bass — even inexpensive foam isolation pads under each speaker meaningfully tightens the low end.

What to skip, at least at first

Skip exotic cables, skip a subwoofer until the main speakers are dialed in, and skip room treatment beyond basic placement adjustments. A system built in the right order rewards each subsequent upgrade; one built backward tends to hide the value of everything that comes after it.

You don’t need four figures and a dedicated listening room to hear a real improvement over laptop speakers.
